Fantasia Talks About Why Winning ‘American Idol’ Sucks

It’s been a while since we’ve heard from American Idol Season 3 winner Fantasia, but apparently she’s been quite busy lately– releasing a new album and birthing out another baby. (Can you believe her first daughter, who was just a tot when Fantasia was on ‘Idol’ is now twelve years old?! This makes The Ashley feel old!)

Fantasia recently sat down with Perez Hilton to discuss what her life’s been like since her ‘Idol’ days. She revealed some pretty juicy tidbits, including why the four remaining ‘Idol’ contestants should be crossing their fingers that they don’t win the singing competition.

“Me and Ruben [Studdard] kind of went through the same thing– bad management and bad people around, people who said they cared but really did not care,” she told Perez of what happened after she took home the ‘Idol’ prize in 2004.

“You win ‘American Idol’ and they put you with whoever they feel you should be with. It’s not your call, it’s not your judge,” she said. “You automatically leave off thinking, ‘I’m good, they have my back.’ And then you realize that they didn’t have your back.”

Fantasia is certainly not the first ‘Idol’ winner to speak out against the management she was given after winning the show. Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson has been very vocal on her detest of her  label and the show’s management. (In addition, many of the show’s winners have basically dropped off the face of the planet after their season. Wonder what Taylor Hicks is up to these days?)

Fantasia also mentioned what she thought would help improve the show’s plummeting ratings.

American Idol
“What can I say? The ladies love me!”

“I would love to see them bring back a legend: an Aretha Franklin or an Elton John….they have the ear for good music and they can see a star from far away,” she said. (I’m sure Mariah Carey will appreciate that comment.)

She also suggested bringing back another type of “legend,” former judge Simon Cowell.

“Simon was a big part of ‘American Idol,'” she said. “He was ‘American Idol.”

Fantasia said that while she hasn’t kept in touch with Simon, she’d “like to…he’s so cute.”

  1. I would like to know why is it that when american idol shows clips of past winners, they don’t show Fantasia or Ruben?
