Thanks for ‘swinging’ over for your ‘Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ history lesson…
Long before fans looked at Fruity Pebbles very differently or were constantly wondering if MomTok would survive petty drama, Taylor Frankie Paul ignited a scandal like no other.
Hulu’s The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives takes fans inside the fascinating world of Mormon influencer moms in Utah. Once a corner of the internet for group dances and the like, MomTok exploded in 2022 when Taylor claimed to be involved in a “soft swinging” scandal with several of her social media cohorts.
The drama catapulted MomTok into the mainstream and eventually landed the group its own Hulu reality show. Though the swinging situation is mentioned in the series, names of the participants and details about the scandal are omitted in favor of plotlines like a group trip to Magic Mike’s Las Vegas show. (No complaints here!)
So what exactly went down back in 2022? Who were the people involved? How did MomTok survive?! Here’s everything you need to know.
When Taylor announced her divorce from Tate Paul in 2022, she cryptically said she couldn’t reveal the details of why her life was “falling apart” without “bringing them all down with me.”
At the same time, rumors swirled that Taylor had cheated on Tate. That prompted Taylor to go live and spill some major tea.
In her since-deleted livestream, Taylor claimed that she and Tate had been “soft swinging” with their friends, who were “all intimate with each other.” According to Taylor, that meant that she and Tate, along with the rest of the group, would not hookup with other people unless their spouse was present.
Taylor explained the particulars more during a recent appearance on The View.
“We opened up our relationship,” she said. “We’re playing games, being intimate, all in front of each other. So we weren’t full-on switching, per se.”
Even so, Taylor said in her 2022 video that she “did step out of that agreement” on one occasion with a man in the group whom she’d begun to develop feelings for. Tate eventually asked for a divorce, but, according to Taylor, there were additional issues that led to the divorce.
“The divorce is not, like, all because of this huge blow-up [in the MomTok group],” she said. “It was more because I feel like we had a lot of other issues, and then this was the tip of the iceberg… we played with fire and we got burned.”
She wasn’t the only one who that happened to, though. In fact, Taylor claimed that one other person involved was also going through a divorce.
As for the who of it all, Taylor, who never named names, said the “majority” of MomTok wasn’t a part of the soft swinging sect.
Among those not involved appear to be the entire cast of ‘Mormon Wives’—Whitney Leavitt (whose husband has admitted to being on Tinder), Layla Taylor (who’s now divorced from the father of her two kids), Demi Engemann (who admitted to picking up a vibe at certain parties), Jessi Ngatikura, Jen Affleck, Mayci Neeley, and Mikayla Matthews.
Several prominent MomTokers have also denied their involvement, including Camille Munday, Miranda McWhorter, whom Taylor sometimes jokingly referred to as her “sister wives.”
Season 1 of ‘The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives’ is now streaming on Hulu.
