Why Was Phillip Phillips Not in This Week’s ‘Idol’ Ford Commercial?

If you were one of the over 11 million people that watched American Idol last night, you may be wondering 1) why the hell America eliminated the best singer in the competition, Joshua Ledet (more on that later… The Ashley is mad!) and 2) why Phillip Phillips wasn’t forced to participate in the cheesy-but-fantastic Ford commercial this week.

Phillip was nowhere to be found in this week’s silent-movie-themed Ford product pitch video. (The Ashley has nothing better to do than notice things like that.) Of course, she had to sleuth it out to see why ol’ Philly is allowed to be exempt from the horrible hi-jinks that these videos usually entail.

The answer? He’s practically dying. According to a story posted on TMZ this morning, Phillip is in desperate need of kidney surgery! He’s been suffering from severe kidney problems all season long, even having to have a temporary procedure to hold him off until he can have surgery. (He refuses to quit the competition.) EXCLUSIVE: ‘Idol’ Skylar Laine Ditches Long-Time High School Sweetheart!

Skylar and her high school sweetheart, in happier days.

She may have been eliminated from American Idol last week, but Skylar Laine is ready for a career in country music– and a new boyfriend!

Up until last week, the fiery redhead was dating a fellow Brandon, Mississippi native named Joseph. The high school sweethearts seemed to be joined at the hip, doing all of the things Southern couples do together– attending proms, huntin’ and four-wheelin’–for nearly three years.

Unfortunately, things started going downhill once Skylar left for Hollywood at the beginning of the year to compete on ‘American Idol.’ Joseph was unable to pull the cash together to fly to California to see his girlfriend perform. (Just FYI- the show doesn’t fly the contestants’ family or friends out to see them on the show. The family has to foot their own travel bills.)

“He has not come out here yet,” Skylar told Singers and Critics on April 26. “He’s trying to save up some money to come out here.”

Unfortunately, Skylar and her longtime beau split just days after she gave this interview. Joseph, while heartbroken, is still supportive of his now ex-girlfriend, as is his entire family. READ MORE »

Top 7 Creepiest ‘American Idol’ Stage Looks So Far

The American Idol producers have made some changes to the show to try to spruce it up and keep it exciting. However, somewhere down the line someone must have decided that the ‘Idol’ stage was looking a little stale after 10 seasons and was in need of a makeover. Unfortunately, that makeover came in the form of super-creepy images on the screens behind the singers, ultra-cheesy props and graphics so distracting that you can barely focus on whatever crappy Stevie Wonder song the kids are singing!

During the first few episodes of this season, the graphics and lighting special effects were relatively unobtrusive, but as the season has gone on, the “concepts” of these sets has become downright ridiculous!

As you Roundupers know, The Ashley loves all things creepy, so rather than complain about these ridiculous sets, she will instead celebrate them! Here, she brings you the Top 8 Worst Stage Looks seen on ‘Idol’ this year.

You have to pay extra if you want a fancier background...

7. The Glamour Shot Trio

I have no idea what song Hollie, Joshua and Jessica were singing during this number because I was too busy laughing at the lame neon lasers in the background. Seeing those gave me flashbacks of going to the mall to take cheesy Glamour Shot photos with my friends that featured those same lasers in the background. READ MORE »

‘American Idol’ Top 7 Recap: Creepy Go-Go Dancers & Crappy Filler

There are only seven singers left on American Idol! Normally, around this time in the season, FOX cuts the showtime down to an hour or an hour-and-a-half. But because they’re being super-greedy this season, they are still requiring us to watch two hours of mildy interesting filler. (Yes, I know that they don’t actually require that we watch the full two hours but…we have no lives. What else are we going to do?!)

Anyway, the show starts out with a tribute to the most-recent “fallen” ‘Idol,’ DeAndre. Everyone’s shown crying and remembering the good times they had with him. Um….they know he didn’t die or anything, right? He just got kicked off a TV show. No need to bust out the sad memorial music. Good Lord….

After the ridiculous DeAndre montage, we get to follow Tommy Hilfiger as he takes the Idols into the closet to pick out some more horrific clothes for these poor kids to wear. I just keep waiting for the week where everyone has to go to Kohl’s to pick something out of J-Lo‘s new clothing line to wear. (Hello, product placement!) READ MORE »

The Ashley is ready to burst with excitement! She just found out that Gwen Stefani and Tony Kanal of No Doubt will be mentoring the ‘American Idol’ contestants this week! This makes The Ashley so excited because she is possibly the band’s biggest fan…ever.

How big of a fan, you ask? You’re all about to learn just how creepy The Ashley truly is when it comes to her obsession for the band.

Since we are all from the same hometown, (Anaheim, California, holla!) The Ashley has been obsessed with No Doubt since before they were even famous! ‘American Idol’ Top 9: Stevie Nicks Mentors & Everyone Wears Bad Clothes

This week, the American Idol contestants channeled their own idols. With only nine contestants left, everyone decided that tonight was going to be the night to step up and show America that they could actually sing.

While the singing was above average (especially compared to last week’s screech-fest) However, we’ll get to that in a second because what The Ashley really wants to discuss is the creeptastic outfits that Tommy Hilfiger dressed these poor kids in. American Idol “Gentle Giant” Jermaine Jones Not So Gentle?

Holy Idol scandal, Batman!

TMZ broke the story last night that 6’8 baritone singer Jermaine Jones (whose nickname up until this point was the “Gentle Giant”) will be kicked off American Idol tonight after it was discovered that he had multiple run-ins with the law in 2011, including an arrest stemming from a fight at a New Jersey Howard Johnson Hotel. (I’d hate to be the guy he hit at the Ho-Jo! One slap from someone his size could probably put another dude in the hospital!)

Anyway, TMZ reports that Jermaine was able to slip through the show’s background checks because he gave cops a fake name both times he was arrested. He also had four outstanding warrants floating around New Jersey, including three for driving on a suspended license and one for disorderly conduct with an open container.  (As you do.) READ MORE »

Will Heejun Han Save This Season of ‘American Idol?’

Faithful Roundupers know that The Ashley loves her American Idol, but even she has to admit that things on the ‘Idol’ set have gotten a bit stale. (Um…maybe it’s because you make people sing the same stupid Stevie Wonder songs every other week?) With shows like The Voice and X-Factor just waiting to pluck from Idol’s once-untouchable fan base, the show’s producers are starting to have to think of ways to keep things entertaining.

Enter Heejun Han.

While Heejun is an above-average singer, no one can honestly say that he is in the same talent bracket that say, Carrie Underwood is. The ‘Idol’ judges cut many more-talented singers this year (two words: Johnny Keyser!) yet Heejun made it through. The reason? Um…probably this: READ MORE »

‘American Idol’ Top 13: Who Conquered & Who Croaked (Literally!)

Last night on American Idol, the kids that make up the Top 13 had their first (and for two of them, their last) chance to sing on the big stage for America.

For the first “real” show of the season, producers chose two themes: one for the guys and one for the girls. The theme for the girls was the songs of Whitney Houston (since she died and stuff, in case you hadn’t heard). The guys’ theme was….wait for it…Stevie Wonder!

For the love of God, why must the wheel out Stevie Wonder at least three times a year on this crappy show? Does the guy have stock at Fox or something?! I would have bet my [unborn] first child that we’d being hearing “Superstition” sooner rather than later on this season. They couldn’t even wait a few weeks– they had to do it for the very first episode!

Before we move on, I do have another beef here: why the hell is it suddenly OK for girls to sing Whitney songs? For 10 years anyone who dare sing a Whitney Houston song was basically tarred and feathered on stage for attempting to do so, but now that she’s dead, it’s not only OK but required?! What the hell?
