While many of the Vanderpump Rules couples have tied the knot or are getting set to do so, Kristen Doute announced on Saturday that she and boyfriend Brian Carter—- known as “Carter” on the show—- have ended things for good.
Kristen took to Instagram this weekend to explain the status of she and Carter’s on-again/off-again relationship, stating that despite working on things, the two were moving on separately.
“Relationships are mess and it’s not fair to anyone to hide from the truth for the sake of criticism. Let’s start there,” she wrote. “I haven’t come to terms with everyone wanting a black and white answer of where Carter and I stand. I want to scream, what about the gray parts of this, the undefinable aspects of loving and caring for someone, while knowing that they aren’t your person anymore?
“After the therapy, the meditation, all the steps you take to pursue actual self love, how do you define the realization that you have to move on in order to truly grow?”
Last season on ‘Vanderpump Rules’, fans watched as Kristen’s best friends Stassi Schroeder and Katie Maloney openly criticized her relationship with Carter, most notably when they came to blows at a gathering at the couple’s apartment.
During the Season 7 reunion, Kristen revealed that she and Carter had in fact broken up after dating for four years, however, she said they were continuing to live together. The pair also, according to Us Weekly, attended the June wedding of Kristen’s co-stars Jax Taylor and Brittany Cartwright.
Kristen seemed to acknowledge the flack received by her friends for continuing to try to make things work with Carter in her Instagram post. She then confirmed that the two were going through their own “version of a conscious uncoupling.”
“I’ve been called a hypocrite, a villain, for not communicating what has been going on between us because it has been just that… between us,” she said. “But we both deserve this weight to be lifted, so this is our version of a conscious uncoupling.”
Kristen went on to write that she and Carter have to come to terms with their new “friend” label, though she said it is “full of the utmost love and respect.”
“He’s one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever known. As we unravel what has been for so long such an intertwined life, it hasn’t been easy. But it’s a step in the right direction,” she continued. “It may not be the black and white answer everyone is looking for, but it’s our answer and that will just have to do.”
