Alaskan Bush People star Bear Brown shared a positive update about his mom, 61-year-old Ami Brown, on Thursday afternoon after revealing late Tuesday that the Brown family matriarch had been hospitalized.
Bear– one of Ami and late husband Billy Brown’s seven children– shared with fans on Tuesday that Ami had been admitted to the hospital because she was experiencing chest pains. Bear said it was suspected that Ami had “a small case of pneumonia,” but reiterated that his mom had yet to receive a diagnosis. On Wednesday, Bear revealed that Ami’s condition had worsened to the point of her having to be flown to a bigger hospital. He also shared that Ami was placed on a breathing tube and into a medically induced coma to help her rest and breathe.
“[It’s not] he best news ever, but it could be worse.” Bear said on Wednesday, explaining that late Tuesday night, Ami “started getting worse, so they had to put a breathing tube in.”
“ … they had to, like, knock her out to do it and then they flew her to a larger town … with a better hospital, that’s where she is now,” he said. “They are attempting to wake her up, but apparently you don’t just wake people up immediately, it has to be done in stages or something, which is normal.”
Bear told fans that the whole ordeal “sucks for sure,” recalling that Ami had just been at his house visiting, where she stayed overnight. Bear claimed that Ami woke up the following morning complaining of chest pain, but ended up going back home. Later that day, Bear said his mom called and claimed that her symptoms had worsened, at which point she went to the emergency room and was later admitted.
Bird Brown— another one of Ami’s children— also updated fans on Wednesday.
“She’s been getting so sick so often because there’s been a lot of sicknesses in our area and it just seems to hit mom really, really hard,” she said, eventually becoming emotional in the video she posted to social media. “Basically, her lungs are really bad. They have put her in anesthesia so her body can rest and be working as little as possible.
Thursday afternoon, Bear took to Instagram for another update on Ami– this one, much more positive than the first two.
Bear revealed that doctors had removed Ami’s breathing tube after being unable to do so the previous night and that Ami had finally woken up.
“Mom is conscious, she’s able to talk to us over the phone,” he said, noting that Ami still “has to recover” and remains in the hospital at this time.
“ … But they got the tube out and she is awake,” he reiterated. “That’s some scary stuff, ‘cause one second you can call and talk to your mom, she can come over, and one second she just can’t.”
Bear ended his video by assuring fans that Ami is “on the uphill” and is recovering.
As ‘Alaskan Bush People’ fans are aware, Ami battled Stage 3 lung cancer back in 2017. Although she was given only a 3 percent chance of survival at the time, Ami went on to beat the cancer and go into remission. However, her battle with lung cancer took a toll on her lungs.
